Fruits and Greens

You’ve always heard you need eight serving of fruits and greens, but no one ever tells you why. Well there are several reasons. Greens help to increase your body’s alkalinity, thus reducing you acidity. When you become more alkaline and better balanced your body can build muscle and lose fat easier. Fruits help to fight free radicals that are damaged cells in our bodies. They do this by bringing anti-oxidants to our system. A diet rich in antioxidants may reduce the risk of disease.
With our busy lifestyles it is not easy to get all the fruits and greens we should. Not to mention the cost. Supplementation can be a great help to achieve success in consuming all the greens and antioxidants your body needs. Orange County Nutritionist free weight loss advice

This is the fourth of a 10 part blog on weight loss.

4. BALANCE

Balancing your meals is not as difficult as it may sound. Think in terms of fractions: protein taking up 1/3 of your plate, vegetables 1/3 and complex carbohydrate the other 1/3. Fats are often part of the protein such as salmon or chicken or used to cook with as in sautéed vegetables. Without this type of combination, you will experience cravings and may not feel satisfied after a meal. This can lead you to consume more calories than is favorable for shedding the pounds.

The 1/3s method works well if you are disciplined and stay on track with good complex carb sources. I.E. Brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes and red potatoes. If you tend more towards whole wheat pasta (no regular pasta when trying to lose fat) barley, beans or baked potatoes then go a little lighter on the carbs and heavier on protein and veggies.

Lastly, unless you exercise after dinner try to have two serving of veggies and no carbs at that meal.

Another part of balance is meal spacing. We want our bodies constantly burning fat and metabolizing food. To achieve this we want to eat 6 or 7 small meals a day. These meals are a combination of whole food meals as described above and protein shakes. Spacing these 21/2 to three hours apart will keep your body burning calories. You cannot go five hours between meals and then slam two protein shake thirty minutes apart and expect results. You need to keep an even pace when feeding your body.

A Satisfied Nutrishop Customer

Over the past several years I have had many changes in my lifestyle. Not only did I turn 40, but I also entered the work force and began working full time which equated to eating out more, drinking wine every evening, and not having as much time to devote to working out. I ultimately gained 23 pounds. I felt horrible! Once I got settled into my new job it was time to implement my new workout routine in August of '08. I was very consistent with my workouts for 2 months, but did not see any results. I met Bill Henry who owned Nutrishop in Lake Forest at a networking event where he promoted his products. Orange County Nutritionist free weight loss advice

This is the third of a 10 part blog on weight loss.

3. SHOP

Food shopping takes a commitment of time and focus. In the long run, you will save time and confusion by having healthy foods on hand. Since your environment directly affects your behaviors, having healthy food around is necessary for healthy eating. To surround yourself with healthy choices you must plan your shopping list. Simply put, do not buy what is not on the list. By keeping the unhealthy foods out of the house you will not be tempted to eat them. Correct shopping practices will keep your food environment full of healthy choices.

Some tips for easy shopping.

- Allot plenty of time for your shopping so you can get everything you need.

- Do not try to shop for too many days at a time. It can be overwhelming to look at two or three weeks of food in the grocery cart. Weekly shopping for fresh produce may your best bet.

- Make a list and stick to it when you shop. (This goes back to step two, planning.) Make sure you are getting foods that both fit in your weight loss plan and that you will eat. Oatmeal or yogurt sitting in your cupboard or refrigerator unconsumed do you no good.

- When shopping for foods to bring to work make sure to purchase meals you will eat and that have minimal preparation. If the meals you bring with you are easy to prepare and eat you will be less likely to leave the food you brought in the fridge and go out to lunch with the gang. As much as possible avoid all the microwave processed foods. They are easy but have no place in healthy eating. Once in a while as a “cheat meal” they are ok, but they should be the exception not the rule.

- Finally, never shop when you are hungry or you may find some unplanned chips in your cart to deal with later.

2. PLANNING

Planning your meals is critical to healthy, balanced eating. Moreover, by knowing ahead of time what you will eat, you will not be at the beck and call of fast food restaurants or the vending machines with their primarily high calorie, unhealthy selections. The old saying ‘Plan your work and work your plan” states it perfectly. The best way to follow the plan is to make one and work it. Write out your plan. Having it your head leaves too much to chance. Also, critical to the plan is reality. You shouldn’t plan on making a gourmet lunch if you only have a microwave and fridge at work. You can plan to have a nice salad with chicken breast you cooked the night before. Planning several meals a day will be easy when supplementing with Protein and a Glutamine Complex. Just take some shaker cups with the powder in them with you and add water when ready to drink. That makes it simple to get all your meals in and keeps you to your plan.

Orange County Nutritionist free weight loss advice

This is the first of a 10 step blog on weight loss.

1. EAT

The only result of starving yourself is feeling hungrier than ever and eventually eating amounts of food above your caloric requirement. Eating five to six small meals a day keeps your metabolism running at its optimal level and you will not experience excessive hunger. It should be step one in your 10 diet tips program. The six meals you consume should have at least 20 grams of protein. You NEED the protein because it burns fat and builds muscle. If you just had the thought “I don’t want big muscles” rethink that. You may not want to look like Governor Arnold but the more lean mass you have the more fat you burn. Your own muscle is your best fat burner. Also avoid bad fat I.E. Trans fats. So look at your labels and no fast food, fried foods, pizza or ice cream. Eat all the veggies you want. Think green when choosing veggies. Carrots and corn have too much sugar to be in a weight loss program. Lastly cut out the carbs at dinner unless you workout after dinner.
